The 2010 Financial Reform Bill was signed into law last week.
"Reform" means to repair, restore, or correct. I can't help but think that somewhere in the process, our Congress forgot what it was they were trying to "correct".
Now I doubt whether anybody disagrees with the fact that financial reform was necessary. But, the more than 2,200 page Bill, which will require over 550 new regulations as well as changes to many existing regulations missed the mark.
Let's hope that clearer heads will prevail in time. In the interim, we could see a general tightening of consumer and business credit, a much less efficient bond market, and a much more personally intrusive consumer system, among many, many other changes.
Nevertheless, we'll do everything we can at MainStreet to ensure that our customers continue to receive the highest of quality products and services without disruption.
I did determine that there was one group of winners - the Walmart's of the world. Perhaps they could pass enough of their savings along to their customers to save us all?

Q. Do you think that social media and banking will be able to coexist?
A. Yes, there is no doubt that there will be a social banking world developing in the near future. More and more consumers want to participate and join social websites like Facebook or Twitter.
Banking is a necessity for nearly all consumers. Combining the two will match up a consumer want and need. The bridging of the gap between the two will take some time, but social banking is coming soon.
